About me

NqMHXSgtO6rWeK.jpeg

My name is Alvin Lui and I was born & raised in Toronto, Ontario. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Radiation Sciences from the University of Toronto.

I have been practicing since 2013 as a registered Medical Radiation Technologist with a specialization in radiological technology MRT(R).

MRT(R)s use their extensive knowledge of anatomy and technology in imaging to perform a variety of essential diagnostic imaging procedures for patients including X-Rays, Computed Tomography (CT) Scans, Fluoroscopy Guided procedures (Orthopedic, Urology, Cardiac) and Gastric/Swallowing procedures. The diagnostic imaging test results help physicians diagnose illnesses and tailor treatments. Aside from providing images with optimal diagnostic quality, MRTs are also expected to enforce radiation safety through practices of using as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) amounts of radiation.

MRTs in Ontario are regulated within the Regulated Health Professions Act with the Medical Radiation Technology Act. Our regulatory body - the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) ensures all practicing members are registered, competent and follow standards of practices.  CMRITO also handles negligence and complaints made against a member. If necessary the college will proceed with the disciplinary process.

Ontario MRTs can be apart of two associations. One is our provincial association - Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences (OAMRS) whom advocates for our professional rights & practices while also providing professional liability insurance. The other is our national association - Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) - whom acts as our professional certifying body while also providing professional practice support through continuing education opportunities. In Ontario by joining OAMRS you automatically join CAMRT as well.

As a MRT in the Cath lab I am specially trained in critical care to monitor patient vitals and hemodynamics.  The role also entails scrubbing in and assisting the cardiologists with coronary interventions, structural heart defects and implantable devices. As a member of the on-call STEMI team - we work together with the interventional cardiologist and nurses to treat emergency myocardial infarctions.

My current role is the Charge Technologist at the Toronto General Hospital Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Aside from my clinical duties, I am also the team leader for the MRTs in the cath lab environment. I act as a technical resource and manage any staffing or workflow issues. I am involved in onboarding, organizing educational opportunities and quality improvement projects. My most recent projects include being apart of the Cath lab working group for our Hospital Information System (HIS) transition to EPIC and implementing the Egg Nest - a radiation protection system in the Cath Lab to reduce over all radiation exposures to both staff and patients.
